HISTORY HERE: London

BREIF: With the April 2010 announcement of Apples iPad, A+E Networks Consumer Products approached International Digital Media to create a new multimedia “digital product” that could be rolled out globally for the iPad. In addition, the Product could not have any HISTORY programs within it, only leverage the HISTORY brand, as well as recoup its cost within 2 years of launch. Finally, it had to be developed in 4.5 months, in time for On Air Sweeps push.

MANDATE: Identify and develop a digital product opportunity within the iOS eco system for HISTORY. Internally, develop an App Information Architecture, Database of POI, Content Strategy, Content Acquisition and User Experience. Out source iOS Design and Development.

SOLUTION: Create a Travel and Education app for iOS (iPad and iPhone) where tourist and locals can experience the past in their present location. London was identified as the best city to launch with as it’s the worlds most visited city and it occupants have a deep interest in their past: so we could target HISTORY viewer in London and the US.

CONTENT: Reviewed over 2k places within London, identified 400 of the most searched for, highest rated and visited places. Created a Geo location database, of these 400 location, divided them into 14 categories, with each POI having 2 images (before and after), Video (from1898 – 1968) and Articles(written by DK, linking to History.co.uk)

USER EXPERIENCE  In order to illustrate that History is a physical place, focus the experience around bring the Historical present using your phone, tablet, and location. Highlights include:

  • Geo-location: App locates where you are presents all possible POI’s with your category preferences (ipad, Iphone) Augmented travel: Can Look through Camera and see directions to events and historical POI’s locations (iPhone)
  • Back In time Maps: 9 Historical maps give you context to the changing London Landscape over the last 6 hundred years (iPad) City Tours: A selection of city tours direct you through the city for Example the Path of Jack the Ripper (iPhone)
  • Favorites and to do’s can be created on the the iPad, synched to the iPhone for your mobile itinerary.
  • Share: Post status of your trip, articles, routes and locations to your friends via Facebook and links back to History.co.uk
